How the Internet Can Help Beat the Winter Blues

With cold weather almost here (at least in the Northern Hemisphere), it’s time to get creative with your indoor activities. Luckily, the internet is full of suggestions that will help you have fun while staying warm! No matter your interests, a quick Google search is sure to introduce you to a community of engaging and creative people with similar interests.

Cooking:

Many television personalities and well-known chefs (as well as adorable amateurs) have videos online where they share recipes and demonstrate how to cook various dishes. Whether you are new to cooking or have been doing it for years, it never hurts to try new things and learn from others. Perhaps you’ll discover a talent you never knew you had or ways to evolve your own recipes. You can even use the tips and tricks you learned from the internet and invite some friends over IRL to try your new creations!

You could be the next master chef. Or you could learn how to make some decent cookies. Either way, it's a win-win.

Gaming:

There is a large online community of gamers eager to meet others who share their passion. Especially if you are new to the video game world, watching other players can help you learn and ultimately improve your skills, as well as build your community. If you have already been in the community for a while, it can be helpful to surround yourself with others who may have knowledge they can share with you. There is always something new to learn and being open to new opportunities is the best way to do so.

Game on. But go easy on the energy drinks, ok?

Art:

Artists of all kinds are now posting videos and making live streams of themselves creating art. It is a great way to share their talent with a large number of people and to gain a following. If you have always wanted to create art but never tried it, use the time spent indoors during the winter to start! By watching established artists, a beginner can learn valuable techniques and lessons. Observing an artist’s creative process also can be a source of inspiration and encouragement. Use the art that you see being shared to spark your creativity. Perhaps one day you can share your art and inspire others!

Book Clubs:

If you’re interested in reading, there are a number of online book clubs you can join! No matter what genre(s) you like, a simple Google search can lead you to others who share similar preferences and want to chat about their favorite books. If it’s too cold to go outside, stay inside with a good book and discuss your opinions with others. Online book clubs can introduce you to new friends as well as new books!

Chat Rooms:

If it’s too cold to go outside, but you still want to meet new people, a great way to do that is to use a chat room service like Paltalk. From the comfort of your own home, you can chat with people from all around the world and form connections over mutual interests. Some chat rooms have video functions, which means you will be able to see exactly to whom you’re talking and to get to know them even better!

Winter can be a hard time to interact with other people when you want to be bundled up in a seven blankets with a cup of your favorite warm beverage, but the internet is making it easier.
